Our travels and adventures in Abu Dhabi 

I början av December 2023 gjorde vi en dagsutflykt till Abu Dhabi från Dubai. Min fru bokade utflykten på nätet hemifrån innan resan, förhandlade om pris och gjorde upp om vad vi ville se. Den första researrangören vi kollade verkade riktigt bra men när vi försökte få ändra en del saker kändes det lite skumt så vi valde en annan till slut. väl på plats visade det sig att det var flera grupper som blivit lurade av den första arrangören vi undersökt så det var tur vi ändrade oss.

In early December 2023, we took a day trip to Abu Dhabi from Dubai. My wife booked the trip online from home before the journey, negotiated the price, and made arrangements about what we wanted to see. The first tour operator we looked at seemed really good, but when we tried to change a few things, it felt a bit sketchy, so we ultimately chose another one. When we got there, it turned out that several groups had been scammed by the first operator we had looked into, so it was lucky we changed our minds. 

På väg till Abu Dhabi såg vi många häftiga byggnader av olika slag.

On the way to Abu Dhabi, we saw many impressive buildings of different kinds. 

Första stoppet för oss blev Shejk Zayed-moskén i Abu Dhabi, huvudstaden i Förenade arabemiraten. Den stod klar 2007. Är landets största moské och har plats för mer än 40000 personer. I den störstbönesalen ryms 7000 presoner. Moskén har 4 minareter som är 107 meter höga och 83 kupolvalv i sju olika storlekar,varav den högsta är 85 meter hög. 1096 pelare håller upp utomhusarkaderna. de sexkantiga pelarna äl klädda med marmor och har inlägg av intrikata blommönster bestående av lapis lazuli, röd agat, pärlemor med pietra dura teknik.

Moskén byggdes för att hedra den första ledaren av Förenade arabemiraten, Shejk Zajed bin Sultan Al Nahayan och tog mindre än 11 år att slutföra. Den kostade 545 miljoner dollar att bygga. Arkitekten Yousef Abdelky från Syrien inspirerades av den persiska arkitekturen. totalt arbetade mer än 3000 personer och 38 företag med projektet.

Our first stop was the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It was completed in 2007. It is the largest mosque in the country and can accommodate more than 40,000 people. The largest prayer hall can hold 7,000 individuals. The mosque has 4 minarets that are 107 meters tall and 83 domes in seven different sizes, the highest of which is 85 meters tall. 1,096 pillars support the outdoor arcades. The hexagonal pillars are clad in marble and feature intricate floral patterns made of lapis lazuli, red agate, and mother of pearl using the pietra dura technique.

The mosque was built to honor the first leader of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and took less than 11 years to complete. It cost $545 million to build. The architect Yousef Abdelky from Syria was inspired by Persian architecture. In total, more than 3,000 people and 38 companies worked on the project. 

Visst är det en imponerande och vacker byggnad men har man besökt Taj Mahal så känns det lite plastigt och inte lika välgjort trots alla moderna maskiner som underlättar arbetet jämfört med vad det hade att tillgå när Taj Mahal byggdes.

Certainly it is an impressive and beautiful building, but if one has visited the Taj Mahal, it feels a bit plastic and not as well-made despite all the modern machines that facilitate the work compared to what was available when the Taj Mahal was built.

Mattan i stora bönesalen är världens största handknutna matta enligt Guinness world records. Designen föreställer en intrikat Islamsk medaljong och har knutits för hand av uppskattningsvis 1200 konstnärer och tog ca 2 år att göra. Mattan är 5400 kvadratmeter och väger 35 ton. den är gjord av 70 % ull och 30% bomull.

Vägen in till och stora bönesalen är rikt utsmyckade med blommönster, målat glas och textilier. Ljuskronorna är tillverkade i rostfrittt stål och täckt med 24 karats guldpläterad mässing och Swarovskikristaller i olika färger.

The carpet in the main prayer hall is the world's largest hand-knotted carpet according to the Guinness World Records. The design features an intricate Islamic medallion and has been hand-knotted by approximately 1,200 artisans, taking around 2 years to complete. The carpet measures 5,400 square meters and weighs 35 tons. It is made of 70% wool and 30% cotton.The entrance to and the main prayer hall are richly adorned with floral patterns, stained glass, and textiles. The chandeliers are made of stainless steel and covered with 24-carat gold-plated brass and Swarovski crystals in various colors.The clock displays the date according to our calendar and the Islamic calendar, and likely various prayer times in the mosque.

I källaren under moskén fanns restauranger, souvenirbutik och lite olika utställningar. Jag köpte en chokladkaka som jag senare förstod kostade 75kr. God var den men jag köper nog inte en till där.

In the basement under the mosque, there were restaurants, a souvenir shop, and a few different exhibitions. I bought a chocolate bar that I later realized cost 75 SEK. It was good, but I probably won't buy another one there. 

Efter Moskén åkte vi till Abu Dhabi Heritage village tror jag det hette. någon typ av museum för att visa hur livet varit innan oljepengarna började komma. det var inte riktig något vi ville till men det ingick i turen. tror vår chaufför behövde lätta på trycket...

After the mosque, we went to Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, I think it was called. Some type of museum to show how life was before the oil money started coming in. It wasn't really something we wanted to go to, but it was included in the tour. I think our driver needed to relieve some pressure... 

Sedan åkte vi till Emirates Palace Mandarine Oriental. Ett väldigt lyxigt hotell. Vacker inredning och exklusiva butiker. De hade en väldigt stor kille som tog emot ute vid bilen. 

Efter hotellet åkte vi till en dadel marknad i utkanten av staden i vad som kändes som ett industriområde. Tyvärr inga bilder där ifrån. Det var en upplevelse! dadlarna vi kan köpa här hemma går inte att jämföra med färska nyplockade som fanns där. vi smakade många sorten i butiken. ju mörkare mandel ju mer choklad smakade de. jag köpte och åt upp 1 kilo och gav bort ett annat som också tog slut inom någon vecka.

Then we went to the Emirates Palace Mandarine Oriental. A very luxurious hotel. Beautiful decor and exclusive shops. They had a very big guy who welcomed us outside by the car.After the hotel, we went to a date market on the outskirts of the city in what felt like an industrial area. Unfortunately, no pictures from there. It was an experience! The dates we can buy here at home cannot compare to the fresh ones picked there. We tasted many varieties in the store. The darker the almond, the more chocolate they tasted. I bought and ate 1 kilo and gave away another that also disappeared within a week. 

På väg till Ferarri world åkte vi förbi centrum, Warner Brothers och någon nöjespark.

On the way to Ferrari World, we passed by the center, Warner Brothers, and some amusement park. 

Sista stället vi besökte var Ferrari World. Vi gick bara in i stora entrén och tittade. hade säkert gått att roa sig där i flera dagar om man hade lust men vi tittade och åkte hem till hotellet efter en lång dag med en massa nya upplevelser.

The last place we visited was Ferrari World. We just went into the main entrance and looked around. We could have easily spent several days there if we had the desire, but we just looked around and went back to the hotel after a long day filled with many new experiences.
